Conservative Lies Busted Once Again.

I received an email (see text in black below) from a conservative friend who challenged me to print it in it’s entirety while doubting that I was “fair and balanced” enough to print it exactly as sent.  Well first of all, conservatives have long ago completely lost any credible understanding of clear and balanced.  Secondly, I have always felt I was fair in my postings but have never began to suggest that I was balanced! (mentally or ideologically)  Secondly I could not reprint it as it was sent to me because my spell checker program almost burnt up my computer when I copied the email into my Word program so I cleaned that up for them.  Here we go.

Our Social Security

Many years ago in Seattle, two wonderful neighbors, Elliott and Patty Roosevelt came to my home to swim on a regular basis. They were a great couple full of laughter and stories that today I continue to marvel at.  Both are now deceased, but their stories remain.  During the years of our friendship we had many, many discussions a bout Elliott's parents  (President Franklin D. and Eleanor Roosevelt) and how his father and mother never intended for the Social Security and

Welfare programs to turn out the way they are today. Elliott used to say that if his parents returned to earth and saw what the politicians had done to their programs they would have burned all of them in hell.  Here is a story I received today regarding the Social Security

Program and I immediately thought of Elliott's comments.  I Hope you will read this and think about it.  Franklin Roosevelt, a Democrat, introduced the Social Security (FICA) Program. He promised:

1) That participation in the Program would be completely voluntary,

2.) That the participants would only have to pay 1% of the first $1,400 of their annual incomes into the Program,

3.) That the money the participants elected to put into the Program would be deductible from their income for tax purposes each year.

4.) That the money the participants put into the independent "Trust Fund" rather than into the General operating fund, and therefore, would only be used to fund the Social Security Retirement Program, and no other Government program

5.) That the annuity payments to the retirees would never be taxed as income.  Since many of us have paid into FICA for years and are now receiving a Social Security check every month -- and then finding that we are getting taxed on 85% of the money we paid to the Federal government to "put away"

-- you may be interested in the following:

Q: Which Political Party took Social Security from the independent "Trust Fund" and put it into the General fund so that Congress could spend it?  A: It was Lyndon Johnson and the democratically controlled House and Senate.

Q: Which Political Party eliminated the income tax deduction for Social Security (FICA) withholding?  A: The Democratic Party.

Q: Which Political Party started taxing Social Security annuities?  A: The Democratic Party, with Al Gore casting the "tie-breaking" deciding vote as President of the Senate, while he was Vice President of the US.

AND MY FAVORITE:

Q: Which Political Party decided to start giving annuity payments to immigrants?  A: That's right; Jimmy Carter and the Democratic Party! Immigrants moved into this country, and at age 65, began to receive Social Security payments! The Democratic Party gave these payments to them, even though they never paid a dime into it!  Then, after doing all this lying and thieving and violating of the original contract (FICA), the Democrats turn around and tell you that the Republicans want to take your Social Security away!  And the worst part about it is uninformed citizens believe it

    ==============================================

If enough people receive this, maybe a seed of awareness will be planted and maybe changes will evolve. Maybe not, some Democrats are lawfully sure of what isn't so.  But it's worth a try. How many people can YOU send this to?  Actions speak louder than bumper stickers.  Forward this E-mail to others so that they can be informed of the truth.

Now the Red Hog would feel foolish to forward an email that was a blatant lie or I would be embarrassed to put something out which I had not taken the time to verify as true.  I would be especially embarrassed to present it to someone as fact and challenge them to see the light.  I see the light alright and from here it appears to be very dim indeed!  I have never EVER heard any democrat tell anybody that the Republicans want to take away their social security and as for lying and thieving, I think we all know who is the reigning champions of those characteristics.

Here are the FACTS as obtained from the Social Security website which operates under the control of the GOP.

Q1. Which political party took Social Security from the independent trust fund and put it into the general fund so that Congress could spend it?
A1: There has never been any change in the way the Social Security program is financed or the way that Social Security payroll taxes are used by the federal government. The Social Security Trust Fund was created in 1939 as part of the Amendments enacted in that year. From its inception, the Trust Fund has always worked the same way. The Social Security Trust Fund has never been "put into the general fund of the government."

Most likely this question comes from a confusion between the financing of the Social Security program and the way the Social Security Trust Fund is treated in federal budget accounting. Starting in 1969 (due to action by the Johnson Administration in 1968) the transactions to the Trust Fund were included in what is known as the "unified budget." This means that every function of the federal government is included in a single budget. This is sometimes described by saying that the Social Security Trust Funds are "on-budget." This budget treatment of the Social Security Trust Fund continued until 1990 when the Trust Funds were again taken "off-budget." This means only that they are shown as a separate account in the federal budget. But whether the Trust Funds are "on-budget" or "off-budget" is primarily a question of accounting practices--it has no affect on the actual operations of the Trust Fund itself.

Q2: Which political party eliminated the income tax deduction for Social Security (FICA) withholding?

A2: There was never any provision of law making the Social Security taxes paid by employees deductible for income tax purposes. In fact, the 1935 law expressly forbid this idea, in Section 803 of Title VIII.

(The text of Title VIII. can be found elsewhere on our website.)

Q3. Which political party started taxing Social Security annuities?
A3. The taxation of Social Security began in 1984 following passage of a set of Amendments in 1983, which were signed into law by President Reagan in April 1983. These amendments passed the Congress in 1983 on an overwhelmingly bi-partisan vote.

The basic rule put in place was that up to 50% of Social Security benefits could be added to taxable income, if the taxpayer's total income exceeded certain thresholds.

The taxation of benefits was a proposal which came from the Greenspan Commission appointed by President Reagan and chaired by Alan Greenspan, who is presently serving as Chairman of the Federal Reserve.

The full text of the Greenspan Commission report is available on our website.

President's Reagan's signing statement for the 1983 Amendments can also be found on our website.

A detailed explanation of the provisions of the 1983 law is also available on the website.

Q4. Which political party increased the taxes on Social Security annuities?

A4. In 1993, legislation was enacted which had the effect of increasing the tax put in place under the 1983 law. It raised from 50% to 85% the portion of Social Security benefits subject to taxation; but the increased percentage only applied to "higher income" beneficiaries. Beneficiaries of modest incomes might still be subject to the 50% rate, or to no taxation at all, depending on their overall taxable income.

This change in the tax rate was one provision in a massive Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (OBRA) passed that year. The OBRA 1993 legislation was deadlocked in the Senate on a tie vote of 50-50 and Vice President Al Gore cast the deciding vote in favor of passage. President Clinton signed the bill into law on August 10, 1993.

(You can find a brief historical summary of the development of taxation of Social Security benefits
on the Social Security website.)

Q5. Which political party decided to start giving annuity payments to immigrants?
A5. Neither immigrants nor anyone else is able to collect Social Security benefits without someone paying Social Security payroll taxes into the system. The conditions under which Social Security benefits are payable, and to whom, can be found in the
pamphlets available on our website.

The question confuses the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program with Social Security. SSI is a federal welfare program and no contributions, from immigrants or citizens or anyone else, is required for eligibility. Under certain conditions, immigrants can qualify for SSI benefits. The SSI program was an initiative of the Nixon Administration and was signed into law by President Nixon on October 30, 1972.

An explanation of the basics of Social Security, and the distinction between Social Security and SSI, can be found on the Social Security website.

You can check out the answers to these questions yourself at the Social Security Administrations website. http://www.ssa.gov/history/InternetMyths2.html

So there, I printed the email in its entirety and want to once again point out that IT SEEMS ALL SUPPORTERS OF THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION HAVE A PROBLEM WITH PROMOTING THE TRUTH!  I challenge the senders of the original email retract their previous email and copy this post, in its entirety.  If they are fair, balanced and even only a little bit honest they will do that!trust-fund-debt.gif

Oh and for the record.  All of that spending of social security money?  Take a look at how well the Republicans are protecting your social security money.

At some point in time America will wake up to the distortion, lies and coruption of the proponents of the new Republican Agenda.  Until then old Honest Abe must be spinning in his grave!

What do you think?

Make Plans to Vote Next Tuesday.

I got this email yesterday referring to my Wednesday post, “I agree with you on the separation of power.  That way nothing would get done which would benefit us all.”   Those are the words of a disgruntled supporter of the GOP; a person who is embarrassed by the job done by those who share his ideology.  Believing stagnation would be preferable to progress in overcoming the challenging problems before us is to subscribe to the politics of gloom and doom.  One party control of the House, Senate and White House definitely allows things to be done more quickly but what if the things being done are detrimental to the future of the country and the world?  The framers of our Constitution expressly divided the legislative and executive branches with the hope that laws would be created only after thorough consideration, sufficient debate and accord from a representative sampling of the population.

Looking back to two of the most popular presidents in our recent history you see Presidents who did not have complete partisan support in Washington.  Ronald Reagan served both terms and never had a Republican House to support his agenda.  Bill Clinton did not enjoy Congressional support during all of his years either.  The point to be made from the popularity of these two Presidents is that the legislation that comes out of a bipartisan government is more moderate and supported by a broader spectrum of the constituency.  To suggest that nothing could get done smacks of defeatism although in the case of our current president perhaps allowing him to do nothing would actually be preferable than allowing him to do more harm.

The election is now only four days away.  I’m fairly certain that most voters have already made up their mind who they would vote for.  What remains to be seen is who will actually vote.  As the election draws near I find it hard to imagine that there are many undecided voters in an election that is as polarized as this one.  The choices seem fairly simple.  I don’t pretend to be able to understand how anyone could continue to support the Bush Administration and control of both houses of the legislature by the Republican Party.  Many Republicans don’t even support the Bush Administration as they have veered so far from the tenets of their traditional platform.    Elections are about choices — choosing who will represent you in the thousands of decisions our leaders make on a daily basis. Like me, I suspect you care deeply about national security, energy security, health care, political corruption, the environment, education, and more. The choices you make on November 7th will reflect these issues. While I won't ask you to vote for any particular candidate, I will ask you to think carefully about your choice and consider which candidates will help your hometown and our country become great again.

The Way Democracy Should Work III

I have finally found a group of conservatives that I can agree with.  The October issue of Washington Monthly had articles written by seven prominent Republicans who see expanding government, runaway spending, Middle East entanglements, and government corruption as justification for a balance of power in the Congress and White House.  After witnessing what their own party has done with absolute control they are longing for the glory days of the Clinton Presidency and quantifiable and qualitatively effective government.  The independent stories written by the prominent conservatives build around the idea that it would serve the nation well for a shift in power at this year’s midterm election.  I couldn’t agree more.

All gloating aside I would suggest that even I, flaming liberal that I am, would be a proponent of a balance of power that would see the House controlled by one party, the Senate another.  I would suggest that the nation would be best served under that scenario as long as the President was always a Democrat.  Historically, the nation has always done better with a Democrat in the White House.  Even when a Democrat lead during difficult times a case could be made that the United States would have been worse off with a Republican in the Oval Office.

Christopher Buckley, son of William F. Buckley was lamenting for the Republican Party he grew up with.  He commented that Dwight Eisenhower, William F. Buckley, Barry Goldwater, Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan stood for certain things.  He admits that there were problems with those administrations but there were always compensating triumphs.  He later goes on to say, “Despite the failures, one had the sense that the party at least knew in its heart of hearts that these were failures, either of principle or execution. Today one has no sense, aside from a slight lowering of the swagger-mometer, that the president or the Republican Congress is in the least bit chastened by their debacles.”

In previous Red Hog Diary posts supporting campaign and lobby reform I have suggested that I was leery of what my favored democratic leaders would do were they to have complete control of Washington as the Republicans currently enjoy.  I have suggested that a sense of entitlement and one-up-manship might prevail and I am loathe to imagine anybody I voted for behaving as badly as the current crooks on the Republican side of the aisle.  The key to a balance of power in Washington is that balance makes government work the way the framers of our constitution intended it to work.  A balance of power between the executive and legislative branches creates an environment of checks and balances.  We can no longer afford for one party to control the House, the Senate and the Oval office.  Literally we can not afford it.  The out of control spending of the Neo-Cons is something that even makes those so called “tax and spend” Democrats blush.  If you truly love the United States it would seem that you owe it to yourself to cast your votes next Tuesday to remove enough incumbents to restore the balance of power to Washington.  That’s the way a democracy is supposed to work.  What do you think?

I got that going for me.

I’ve been ruined.  In the year that my wife was away I changed in ways that I would have never thought possible.  I first noticed my problem about ten days ago when I caught myself mid-way through a conversation with “She Who Must Be Obeyed” (SWMBO) while I was discussing the victories and plans of my meal preparation like it was my social life.  After describing a dish of baked chicken breasts coated in bread crumbs served over angel hair pasta with stewed tomatoes, basil and garlic with sides of green beans and a tossed salad I stopped short.  I hate to admit it but I was gloating as I described that dinner in detail.  My description of the dinner included the look on my kid’s faces as they took their first bites.  Shock and awe baby, shock and awe.

Saturday “SWMBO” pulled into the drive at home after returning from her one year job assignment in DC and was greeted by ecstatic kids who were primed to smother her with welcome-home affection.  I was conspicuously absent as I was feverishly winding up the vacuum cleaner cord and wiping the sweat from my brow.  I had finished a six hour power clean in the just in the nick of time.  I can’t really tell you how much of a relief it was to actually see her cross the threshold.  It had entered my mind that she may have so enjoyed her life in the nation’s capital that not returning to Palo, Iowa was a possibility.  She did come home though and she seemed happy to be here.  So I got that going for me.

Our first couple of days as a complete family was a blur as we had a school play, unpacking and an acres worth of leaves to rake up.  I also had to work a little each day of the weekend and before I knew it was late Sunday evening.  Finally, Monday night, we began to reestablish the routines that had not been a part of our lives for an entire year.  I’m not quite sure how it happened but upon returning from work Monday I went straight from the front door to the laundry room, tossed a load into both the washing machine and the dryer and made my way to the kitchen and began dinner.  WHAT THE HELL?  I know!  Somewhere along the way I lost track of my rightful place as king of my castle and continued my role as servant extraordinaire.  It wasn’t until I was sliding a sheet of French dip sandwiches into the oven that I questioned what I was doing.  I think “SWMBO” sensed my panic and stepped in to make the dinner preparation more of a partnership than my sole responsibility and I think that may work well for a while.

Senator John Kerry spoke unintelligently during a campaign rally for California Democratic gubernatorial candidate Phil Angelides. Kerry opened his speech at Pasadena City College with several one-liners, saying at one point that Bush had lived in Texas but now "lives in a state of denial."  Well, that comment was pretty good but he then said: "You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq."  That comment, not so smart.  President Bush, Tony Snow and Dennis Hastert immediately jumped on Senator Kerry attacking him as if the intention of the decorated veteran’s words were meant to insult the troops in Iraq.  That, Kerry said, was meant as a reference to Bush, not troops. Kerry said it is the president who owes U.S. soldiers an apology — for "a Katrina foreign policy" that misled the country into war in Iraq, failed to adequately study and plan for the aftermath, has not properly equipped troops and has expanded the terrorist threat.

"I'm sick and tired of a bunch of despicable Republicans who will not debate real policy, who won't take responsibility for their own mistakes, standing up and trying to make other people the butt of those mistakes," he said. "It disgusts me that a bunch of these Republican hacks who've never worn the uniform of our country are willing to lie about those who did."  Politics are as ugly and nasty as we have ever seen this year.  John Kerry has already apologized that his joke was misunderstood.  He has spent the last 35 years fighting for soldiers and veterans and understands fully what it takes to be a soldier.  Kerry was suggesting that if you don't apply yourself fully in school and go on to hold a position of power you may end up making horrible decisions akin to those of the C student from Yale.  Bush and Cheney should apologize to the troops for sending them to do work that neither of them were willing to do when it was their turn to serve.

Customer Service Is Dead!

Dear Mediacom Customer,

Unfortunately, Sinclair has rejected all of our fair market-driven offers and continues to demand exorbitant compensation, penalizing also you – our valued customers – who will ultimately bear the cost and inconveniences of Sinclair’s extreme behavior.

Sincerely yours,
Randy Brown,
Regional Vice President

News Release

Contact: Barry M. Faber, V.P. & General Counsel

Sinclair continues to regret any inconvenience caused to its viewers, Sinclair does not believe it is fair for Mediacom to refuse to pay for programming which it uses to attract and retain fee-paying subscribers.

OH MAN!  Don’t you love it when corporate America is so extremely concerned about their customers?  Our local CBS affiliate is owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group, Inc., one of the largest and most diversified television broadcasting companies that currently owns and operates, programs or provides sales services to 58 television stations in 36 markets. Sinclair's television group reaches approximately 22% of U.S. television households and is affiliated with all the major networks.  Mediacom provides cable to more than 1.4 million basic customers. Data customers number about 480,000 and its newly initiated phone service has 22,000 customers and boasting sales of $222 million dollars in 2005.

Here is what makes all of this so painful for the Red Hog.  The local CBS affiliate carries my beloved Iowa Hawkeye’s Basketball games that help me maintain my sanity through the winter and they are own the broadcast rights of this years Super Bowl.  I have all of my connection to the outside world through Mediacom.  They provide my cable TV, my internet and my phone service.  Being as how Mediacom has demonstrated that they can’t negotiate with their partners I will be forced to change all of my services in the event I change my cable provider.  I’m just finding this all so much of a hassle that I would never want to have to go through it again.  That is the whole problem with all of this:  all I want to do is pay my damn bill on time and continue to get the service that I am accustomed to getting.  Well, actually it could improve a little but that is another matter.

So basically I am seeing this as a problem of two media bullies trying to maximize their revenue streams while expecting the other to help them meet their corporate projections.  Both companies are taking a posture that the other must succumb to their demands and neither is willing compromise in an attempt to appease their customer base.  Do you ever get tired of consumers losing out to the out of touch decisions made in executive suites across the land?  This is all just another example of how the division of wealth is creating a super class that has no comprehension of what it is like to live in the real world.  In the real world guys like me find it annoying when they have misplace the remote.  Shopping for hardware or vendors to provide me the entertainment choices that I enjoy is almost unbearable!

Oh yeah, Happy Halloween!

Can You Lend A Hand?

In 2006, Democratic voter turnout matters big-time. Many races will be decided by just hundreds of votes—and those races will determine the future of Congress.  The future of our Congress has never been more critical to the future of our country.   MoveOn's Call for Change program allows people with busy lives to spend as little as 15 minutes mobilizing voters in key races from their home computer and phone.  The goal is to make 5 million calls this election season—2 million have already been made.

Here's what some MoveOn members have reported back:

  • This is easier than any political calling I have done. The print is large, you click on the screen rather than filling in tiny boxes. I like being able to call from home.
    Shelby, Spokane, WA
  • The best part is the flexibility of the program. I can call when my schedule permits, in small time slots: while I'm waiting for a fax, or have a half hour to spare.
     —Diana, Los Angeles, CA
  • The tools, the script, the ease in which you can do this is wonderful! It could not be easier, and you can make a lot of calls in a short amount of time.
    –Tomi, The Woodlands, TX
  • Several major bloggers have already asked their readers to participate in Call for Change. Here's a sampling of what they said:
  • You want to do something for the election, but only have an hour or three to spare? Consider MoveOn's Call For Change...Seems like a great way to work on getting out the vote without having to make a serious time commitment. Remember, we'll only realize our big gains this November if we outwork the other side.
    –Markos,
    Daily Kos
  • In the most sophisticated phone banking program ever produced in American politics, MoveOn.org has created a program to call [five] million key voters in 50 key House districts and more than half a dozen Senate campaigns...it is amazing stuff.
    –Chris Bowers,
    MyDD

Sounds pretty easy huh?  Come on, you can do it.  Join up with MoveOn and help get out the vote for next Tuesday November, 7th.  Remember, if you don’t vote, the freedoms you lose could be your own.

"She's Baaaack!"

Guest Post from Guess Who?

“She who must be obeyed” (while a little weird, true but weird, to call myself that), is finally home!  1010 miles from Arlington, Virginia after stuffing my little Subaru to its gills (think Beverly Hillbilly’s style), I finally arrived in my own driveway this afternoon. And it’s so good to be home!202586862.jpg

The boys met me in the driveway, well, my younger boys anyway.  My oldest boy – the one you know as The Red Hog – was rather frantically trying to do some last minute clean up projects on the old homestead.  But I’m pretty sure he was glad to see me too!  And it’s very good to have my entire family under one roof. I’m very glad I did it, but “He – who – is – frequently – obeyed” says I can never leave again. Well, okay, then, but thanks for letting me do this!  I think we both have a new and profound respect for single parents, those that don’t get to find such a state only temporary.

I made it home in time to see my daughter in her play.  Tonight was the final performance of “The Laramie Project.”   For those of you not familiar with it, it’s a performance based on interviews with people in Laramie, Wyoming after the tragic murder of Matthew Shephard – the gay college student who was kidnapped, beaten and left for dead (and did die) after being tied to a fence on the outskirts of Laramie.  It was a powerful, poignant and gripping piece.  My daughter and all of the kids did an outstanding job and I was glad to get home in time to see it.  Awesome job, Court!

And now, for the best parts of my year –

The people that I worked with were exemplary.  They were helpful, supportive and all extremely bright.  They each made throwing myself into a job that I didn’t know all that much about going into it just about the best experience it could possibly be.  And I’m very grateful to each of them – they know who they are.

And living in the nation’s capitol for a year has been a great opportunity for me.  I’ve managed to re-connect to law school and military friends that I’d sort of lost track of through the years.  Top on the list of old friends re-connected have got to be Sarah and John.  (Well, okay, I didn’t know John before, but I feel like I have!) They have been such a blessing to us this year.  From the day we arrived until the day I left, they have become and remained such good friends.  And while I think I hardly deserve them, I am so glad that I can count them among my friends.  (I asked my youngest what his favorite part of living in D.C. had been.  I mentioned a few things, like going to the top of the Washington Monument.  And then he said, “But my very top favorite was Sarah and John.”  So, thanks for everything!

And now, in no particular order, the other best things of my year –

Seeing the cherry blossoms in the spring with my own eyes

Walking in Arlington Cemetery on Veteran’s Day with a lot of old soldiers and other of us regular old patriots

Seeing the Fourth of July fireworks over the Capitol from the roof of my building

Seeing the pinpoints of light (one each for each person that died) from the Pentagon from the roof of my building on September 11

Having so many friends and family come to see us and learning to know my way around enough to become an unofficial tour guide

Shooting pumpkins from a cannon (!) on a beautiful fall day this year

Tai Shan!!  D.C.’s most beloved resident, the baby panda bear

Being able to get up on a weekend morning and going to whatever museum I wanted – one of my personal favorite’s has always been the National Gallery of Art

Watching my children take advantage of the opportunities that presented themselves and learning to adjust and adapt in such a large, vibrant and diverse city

Finding a great church.  Grace Community Church in Arlington. Great people, great music and  sermons that stick with you.

Food! Shopping! Art!

And now, for the worst parts --- nah, I’d rather just do the positive.   While I must say that splitting up one’s family and living apart from some or all of them has its share of stress, and I’m pretty sure it’s not everyone’s idea of a good time, it has been a very interesting exercise in family dynamics.  And I’m very thankful to my family for supporting my decision and desire to come.  So, there you have it.  No matter where you go, there you are.
